Well, worry no more! I’m excited to introduce my latest project: GPT Recap — a powerful AI tool designed to generate concise and meaningful summaries of your WhatsApp group chats!

What is GPT Recap?

GPT Recap is a web application, coupled with an iOS Siri shortcut, built to bring clarity to your group chat chaos. Using the state-of-the-art GPT-4 model from OpenAI, GPT Recap takes your WhatsApp chat exports and transforms them into concise, easy-to-read summaries. Whether it’s a friendly discussion, an important group meeting, or a lengthy debate, GPT Recap gives you a quick overview of all the key points, saving you time and effort.

Why Did I Build This?

This project started as a solution to a personal problem. I am part of a very active group chat where discussions happen fast and often. With hundreds of messages exchanged daily, keeping up with the flow was becoming impossible. I wanted a way to capture the essence of these conversations without having to read through every single message — and so, GPT Recap was born!

How Does It Work?

The process is straightforward and user-friendly:

1. Export WhatsApp Chat: You can export your WhatsApp chat history directly from the app. The export is in a ZIP format, which contains the chat text file.
2. Send to Siri Shortcut: I’ve created an iOS Siri shortcut that simplifies the process. With just a tap, the shortcut uploads the chat export to GPT Recap’s backend.
3. AI-Powered Summarization: The backend, powered by a Flask web application, cleans and preprocesses the chat logs and then uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 model to generate a summary.
4. Customizable Prompts: Whether you want a summary in a formal style, a casual rundown, or something completely custom, GPT Recap allows you to choose or create your own prompts to suit different contexts.
5. Receive Your Recap: Within moments, you receive a detailed yet concise recap of the conversation — allowing you to catch up in minutes instead of hours.

Getting Started

Getting started with GPT Recap is simple:

1. Download the Siri Shortcut: First, download the GPTRecap Shortcut and add it to your iOS device.
2. Set Up the Backend: Follow the instructions in the README.md file on my GitHub to set up the backend. You’ll need Python, Flask, and a few dependencies, which you can install from the requirements.txt file.
3. Start Generating Summaries: Export your chats from WhatsApp, trigger the shortcut, and let GPT Recap do its magic!
