A trip to the Maeslantkering

Many of you who know me will be aware that I recently took the jump and moved to The Netherlands with my buddy Dan. We’re renting a small flat in Rotterdam on the Nieuwe Maas river.

Rotterdam is a fantastic city with many connections, however one thing that has always fascinated me about Holland is the waterways. Serving a dual purpose, these lines of commerce that helped made Holland the wealthy country that it is today are also part of The Netherlands’ flood defences.

We got some bikes and rode 25km up river to the Maeslantkering (Maeslant Barrier), a gigantic structure which can close to keep the North Sea from flooding the Maas Delta in high water conditions.

We also made a brief stop in nearby Vlaardingen to check out the town. I hope you enjoy this video, there is much more content to come!
